The need to understand the variety of care, quality of care, clinical outcomes, level of efficiency and financial performance being obtained by a provider of healthcare is fundamental to the running of a clinical practice or business. Although most providers maintain systems which provide some level of reporting, the information produced at times has its limitations as it often does not take account of the complexity involved in different aspects of the business or does not provide practical solutions for the improvement of performance or benchmarking. Furthermore, in most healthcare markets, the existence of a formalised funding environment is such that it necessitates healthcare providers to engage funders in a meaningful manner. Due to the nature of the role of a funder, quite often funders typically have more access to analytics on performance and trends on a particular provider. Whilst typically providers of healthcare do not have access to the same level of analytics or benchmarking. This creates an information asymmetry and an unequal basis on which to engage.
